Chuck Schilling has a major-league name but never reached the highest levels like his namesake did as a second baseman for the Red Sox in the 1960s. Schilling played seven years in the Greater Akron Baseball Federation with Stow teams and later became a two-year starter at Stow High School. Schilling earned first-team All-Metro League as a third baseman during his senior campaign in 1974. He then played two seasons with the Hudson Mohawk Chiefs. Schilling, who also played varsity football and basketball at Stow High School, stayed in baseball, but transitioned to the other side of the game. He went on to make quite a name for himself as one of the most successful high school baseball coaches in Ohio over the past quarter of a century.

Schilling elevated the Hudson High School baseball program to the highest level in the state during his 25-year tenure as head coach. Schilling’s Hudson teams won nine league championships, 16 sectional championships, three district championships and one regional championship. Schilling compiled a .679 winning percentage as head coach of the Explorers as he earned 461 victories against 218 losses.

Schilling, who later returned to playing the game in the Roy Hobbs Adult Baseball League in the late 1990s, also left his mark with individual players advancing to higher levels in baseball. Schilling had 62 former Hudson players go on to play collegiate baseball at various levels. He also has had five players sign a pro baseball contract and play minor-league baseball – Jeremy Ison, Jon Kessick, Josh Holden, Jeff Cinadr, Cole Johnson, who has reached the AA level and is still pitching in the Minnesota Twins system.
