Bob Smith may be best remembered by most Akron citizens as a highly respected sheriff from 1944 until 1952, but members of the baseball community will recall his dedication to Akron’s youth. He sponsored all sorts of youth activities, but primarily his AA League entries claimed the most attention. The “Sheriff’s” team of 1948-1952 may well have been the finest ever assembled here. There are 14 members already in this Hall of Fame and several more potential prospects may be honored in years to come. Bob believed that keeping our youth busy and occupied in an orderly pursuit would keep them out of trouble. He practiced that attitude combined with his love of baseball in sponsoring his teams. He was indeed far ahead of his time.
