One of the best ever left handed pitchers and hitters to come out of the east side of Akron, Tom began his career with the Goodyear Heights Pirates in 1962 then with the Braves and Lyles Chevy before becoming an All-City, All-District and All-State performer at East High School. As a junior, he was 8-2 with a 1.45 ERA and two No-Hitters. As a senior, he pitched two more No-Hitters with a 10-2 record, 155 strikeouts in 70 innings and allowed only 1 earned run while hitting .463. Drafted in June 1970 in the 3rd round by Detroit and signed by Hall of Famer Denny Galehouse, Tom spent 5 years in the Tiger farm system, was called up with roommate Mark “The Bird“ Fydrich, but an arm injury ended his career. He then spent 18 years managing and coaching successful Champion Manchester A's, Akron A's and Goodyear Heights teams.
